Migraine is a neurological disease that is characterized by severe headache in the fronto-temporal part of head, more often on the one side (in single cases – on both sides). Symptoms of migraine are not only extremely unpleasant, but can be very dangerous for the patient’s health.
CAUSES OF EMERGENCY
Often the genital predisposition is a generous migraine. Also important factors are the influence of the external environment (noise, overheating in the sun, bright light, strong smells), hormonal changes, frequent stresses, overwork, sleep disturbance, intense mental activity, alcohol abuse.
Most often migraine is preceded by an aura (symptoms-precursors), which can manifest as a visual disturbance (flickering in the eyes, partial loss of visual fields), and loss of sensitivity, problems with speech, thinking (slight inhibition, impaired concentration). These signs indicate a possible early manifestation of headaches. Their duration ranges from 5-20 minutes to several hours.
The pain that arises has a pulsating character and is localized usually on one side of the head. Pain increases with any physical activity, sharp sounds, smells, bright light. The possible duration of pain is from 2 hours to several days.
Pain can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light and sound.
WHAT TO DO?
When migraine symptoms appear you need to visit a neurologist to determine the cause of the pain.
Patients with diagnosed migraine should avoid loads, both physical and psychological. It is also necessary to adhere to the diet, eliminating from the usual diet products that can provoke an attack (beer, red wine, champagne, fish, cheese, chocolate, cocoa, nuts, citrus, sweet fizzy water, fatty and smoked food). It is recommended to avoid lack of sleep.
During an attack it is necessary to create comfortable conditions: to darken the room, to avoid irritants (bright light, noise, sharp smells).
To remove only the beginning of non-intensive pain, you can apply head and neck massage, contrast shower.
Simple analgesics and antispasmodics have an effect only at the beginning of an attack. At the peak of the pain syndrome combined drugs are used that supplement and strengthen each other’s action. To arrest migraine paroxysm, three groups of drugs are prescribed: acetylsalicylic acid and its combinations with caffeine; Preparations containing agonists of serotonin receptors (triptans) and ergotamine.
To prevent the occurrence of seizures, betablockers, calcium channel blockers, antidepressants can be used.
It is necessary to determine the most provocative factors and to eliminate them as much as possible.
To prevent an attack, you should avoid overheating in the sun, stagnant indoors, lack of sleep, the influence of noise, neuropsychic stress, alcohol intake.
